The US Green Building Council (USGBC) from Washington, D.C. awards a LEED Gold certification to Warsaw’s Rondo 1 skyscraper. Rondo 1 is a recently built, multi-tenant edifice, the first such building in Europe to attain the reward.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), launched in March 2000, is an internationally recognized green building certification system. The system provides third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.
According to USGBC, Rondo 1’s conforms to all requisite parameters, including water consumption (decreased by 30 % since October 2009), the use of ligh bulbs containing mercury (considerably curtailed), renewable energy sources (provide 10% of power), waste management (approximately 61% of its waste is sorted), and finally, the eco-friendly commuting of its workers (around 63% of its 5,500 employees use bikes and public transportation).
Rondo 1 was erected by Hochtief and delivered in 2006. It now houses over 70 companies and institutions. The building is now owned by MGPA Europe Fund II.
