To celebrate the Day of the King Casimir in Bochnia, the Underground Relay Race is held in Bochnia at the beginning of March. It is located 212 meters under the ground level and it leads along galleries of the historic salt mine in Bochnia.

It is the only race like this in the world!

Professional runners and regular running enthusiasts take part in the 12 hour long relay race.

In 2004, the event was honoured with the official certificate of the Guinness World Record under the category “The deepest underground half-marathon”. In the following years the form of the event was changed into a 12 hour long relay race.

In 2007, the race was once again entered into the Guinness Record Book under the category “the longest distance to be covered in a relay race underground”.

Each year, relay teams entering the race have an opportunity to be entered into the famous book of records, if the total of kilometres run by all competitors will be higher than that of the official record. In 2008, 53 teams covered the distance of 8,371 km and 529 m and improved the result from the year 2007 by over 373 km, thus setting a new record. In 2009, 55 teams covered the distance of 8,262 km 508 m.

Apart from running, the competitors spend two nights inside the mine and after the race is completed and commemorative medals are distributed, they are invited by the organizer to take part in a guided tour around the mine in Bochnia.
