The underground system of the Miedzyrzecz Fortified Region (Międzyrzecki Rejon Umocniony – MRU) is Poland’s priceless monument of the 20th-century art of fortification, and one of the most interesting structures of this kind across Europe. Built between the World Wars and during the World War II in order to protect the eastern frontier of the Third Reich, it in fact never played an essential role for the actual warfare.
The system comprises tens of installations, which extend over an area of nearly 80 km (50 miles) – anti-tank barriers, bunkers, defensive structures, all linked by a system of underground tunnels, lying at a depth of up to 50 m (164 ft). It takes ca. 2h to walk through the underground maze with a guide, depending on the route.
The MRU underground system is the largest and the most important bat refuge in Poland and Central Europe. In wintertime, about 20,000 to 30,000 of these mammals of 12 various species find shelter here.
