Palm Sunday, Kalwaria Zebrzydowska
Every year in Kalwaria, the Mystery of Christ’s Passion is performed from Palm Sunday to Good Friday.
Over 400 years ago, Mikołaj Zebrzydowski ordered construction of the Calvary (Kalwaria) in imitation of the Way of the Cross in Jerusalem. The following were built: a church, a monastery, chapels and among others: Pilate's Palace, the Tomb of Jesus Christ, the Garden of Gethsemane, Herod’s Palace and the Cenacle.
All buildings are integrated with Beskidy landscape.
During the Holy Week an unusual mystery takes place outdoors, on the Calvary Paths which are 6 km long. It is attended by at least 150 thousand pilgrims coming from different parts of Poland and Europe.
More important roles in the mystery, including the role of Jesus Christ, are played by alumni of the seminary of the Order of Saint Benedict, other roles are played by leaders of pilgrim groups and pilgrims from different regions of Poland.
