The Maria Konopnicka Museum

Maria Konopnicka, the Polish writer of the Positivist period, received the 18th century manor house in Żarnowiec from the society for her 60th birthday. And it is the place that houses today the biographical museum of this outstanding writer.

Maria Konopnicka (1842–1910) was not only a poet, short-story writer, feature writer, translator, but also an activist for women’s rights. In her works, she protested against social injustice, protected the poor and the weak (“Dym” (Smoke), “Nasza Szkapa” (Our Jade), “Jaś nie doczekał” (Johnny died before the spring sun)), taught patriotism. She created one of the most important patriotic songs – “Rota” (Oath) that is still sung during solemn celebrations. She is also the author of well-known and popular rhymes for children (“Stefek Burczymucha” (Stephy the whiner), “Na Jagody” (Picking Berries) “O krasnoludkach i sierotce Marysi” (Little Orphan Mary and the Gnomes)).

The most valuable collections of the museum contain the manuscripts of Maria Konopnicka, original editions of her works, letters of other writers, among others: Eliza Orzeszkowa, Stanisław Przybyszewski and Stefan Żeromski. Unique illustrations to the poet’s works by Jan Marcin Szancer are also worth seeing. The Museum also boasts the biggest in Poland collection of the 19th and 20th century inkwells and office accessories.

Today the museum in the Żarnowiec manor house organises lessons, lectures, poetical and musical concerts and evenings, scientific sessions and symposia, meetings with authors and book promotions.
