The International Festival of Orthodox Church Music (May)

Each year in May the city of Hajnówka in Podlaskie Voivodeship gathers more than 1,000 singers from many countries in Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. For one week, Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral reverberates with solemn liturgical hymns in such languages as Old-Church Slavonic, Ukrainian, Byelorussian, Finnish, Russian, Bulgarian, Swedish, and the Lemko dialect. The festival jury evaluates choir performances and the winning choirs then take part in Gala Concerts held in the Hajnówka Culture Centre and the State Philharmonic in Białystok.

In 1995, the Ministry of Culture recognised the festival as an event of the highest artistic rank, awarding it the “zero category” – the same category as e.g. the Chopin Festival.
