The Museum of one of the most famous Polish writers of the 20th century – Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz and his wife Anna is situated in Stawisko, where the couple spent 50 years of their lives.
Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz (1894–1980) was a co-founder of the Skamander literary group, collaborator of the magazine called “Wiadomości Literackie” and a chief editor of “Twórczość” magazine for many years. His artistic works include novels (“Sława i chwała” (Glory and Vainglory)), short stories (“Panny z wilka” (The Wilko Girls;), “Młyn nad Utratą” (The Mill on the River Utrata)), dramas (“Lato w Nohant” (Summer in Nohant)), poetry, essays, translations. There are great film adaptations of many of his works, made among others by Andrzej Wajda.
The Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz Museum has retained its original interior design and furnishings – furniture, works of art and mementos that create the image of a wealthy Polish house from the first half of the 20th century. The library with 25 thousand volumes including many scripts, manuscripts of books, rich literary archive, letters, a collection of records, photographs is especially worth visiting. Stawisko was not only a house of Anna and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz but also an important centre of cultural life, the artists’ meeting place.
Even today it is an important place on the literary map of Poland. Poetry and music competitions and meetings with artists take place here.
