THE TATRAS The Tatras are the highest mountain range in the Western Central Carpathians. On the Polish side the highest peak is Rysy (2 499 meters above sea level). Here is a view over the glacial lakes - Morskie Oko and Czarny Staw. The interesting, varied and well-groomed tourist paths bring in large numbers of tourists to the Tatras. |

SUKIENNICE The Cloth Hall, or Sukiennice, in Cracow’s Market Square. Once a market hall built at the end of the 14th century and rebuilt in the 15th century in the mannerist style. In the 19th century it was turned into a representative building, with Gothic arcades added. The Sukiennice today houses collections of the National Museum as well as coffee bars and souvenir shops. |

BUGLE CALL IN CRACOW At each and every noon the ‘hejnal’ bugle call can be heard from the 81-meter high tower of Mariacki Church. Legend has it that when the bugle player was warning Cracow of the advance of the Turks in 1241 he was shot in the throat by an arrow, which is why today each day’s call comes to an abrupt halt. |

THE WAWEL IN CRACOW The Royal Castle in Cracow - Wawel, UNESCO listed. From the 10th to the 16th centuries it was the seat of Polish rulers and kings. Situated on a hill above the Vistula River, it was built over many centuries and created in a mixture of styles: Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance. |

MALBORK The Teutonic Knights Castle in Malbork is the largest Gothic fortification in Europe - occupying more than 20 hectares of fortifications. In the period 1309-1457 it was the headquarters of the Teutonic Knights. |

NIEDZICA The castle in Niedzica - one of the most picturesquely situated castles in Poland. Though built in the 14th century, its present shape is owed to the Renaissance. The best preserved are the courtyard and chambers of the upper castle, where from the terrace one has a wonderful panoramic view of Pienin and the Czorsztyn Reservoir. |

TORUN Torun, the city of Nicolaus Copernicus, is famous for its over 300 historic buildings. The city’s Old Town square is on UNESCO’s world heritage list. |

ZYGMUNT’S COLUMN The column of King Zygmunt III on Warsaw’s Castle Square. The monument was founded in 1644 by King Wladyslaw IV. It was destroye in WWII and later reconstructed. |

THE PALACE OF CULTURE AND SCIENCE The Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw was built in the years 1952 - 1955. For many years it was the tallest building in Poland - it has 42 floors and a height of 230 meters. |

WIELICZKA The salt mine at Wieliczka is found on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The mine has been in existence since the 14th century and is the oldest continuously run business in the world. Visitors have access to chambers in the mine at three levels, from 64 to 135 meters below ground, along with a huge underground chapel with salt sculptures and chandeliers. |

WROCLAW TOWN HALL The Town Hall in Wroclaw was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. It combines both Gothic and Renaissance elements. It is worth seeing the beautiful interior of the Town Hall with its Gothic vaulting. |

BIALOWIEZA The Bialowieza Forest is on UNESCO’s list of cultural and natural protected sites. It is one of the environmentally cleanest regions of Poland. |

GUBALOWKA The Tatras, view of Zakopane from Gubalowka. One can reach its summit (1 120 m) by funicular, which is over 1 300 meters and goes up about 300 meters, or take the relatively undemanding foot path. In Gubalowka in winter conditions are perfect for skiing. |

BEAVER Many species of animal not found living in the wild elsewhere in Europe are still in Poland. In the 11th century Polish authorities passed the first edicts ensuring theprotection of rare species: aurochs, bison, and also the beaver. The beaver was saved in Poland - only 20 years ago there were only about a thousand left, today there are 25 000. |

STORKS One quarter of the world population of white storks nests between the Oder and Bug rivers. Ornithologists have counted more than 40 000 of these birds in Poland. |

BLACK STORKS Over 400 bird species appear in Poland. Black storks, a very rare species of breeding birds, is strictly protected. |
 |
THE HOOPOE Only one quarter of the 400 bird species live in Poland throughout the year. Some northern species flock to Poland for the winter, the majority come here for the summer months, for example the hoopoe. The species is legally protected in Poland. |

GEESE Greylag geese are one of the rarest breeding species. |

EAGLES The golden eagle, a protected species. It once had a quite large population of birds in all of Europe. Today, as an effect of the cutting down of stands of mature trees in the forests its number has drastically fallen. In Poland at present only 15 pairs nest, mainly in the Carpathian Mountains and in the Mazuria region. |

EUROPEAN BISON They were killed off almost completely in the 18th century. In Poland the reintroduction of this large animal was, however, successful. Most bison live today in the Bialowieza Forest - about 250 representatives of this species. The total population in Poland is about 660. |
