Ryszard Kapuscinski’s Evening

23 January 2012, in the fifth anniversary of the death of Ryszard Kapuscinski, the University of Warsaw will organise a special evening dedicated to the memory of the writer, and 24 January there will be a meeting with long-time friend of Kapuscinski - Mr. Miroslaw Ikonowicz.
Ryszard Kapuscinski, next to Stanislaw Lem, is the most published and translated Polish writer abroad. Kapuscinski is known for his passion for travelling and reports from his expeditions. He is the author of many books which have been translated into more than 30 languages. Critics around the world has always emphasized his perfect skill of synthesis, his versatility and timeless nature of issues raised by him. He was an award-winning writer (including the awards of the Polish PEN-club, the Goethe Prize, Prize of the Prince of Austria, the Italian Literary Award of Elsa Morante).

During Monday meeting the first scholarship for a young journalist from Herodot Foundation will be given (Kapuscinski's wish was to spend part of his royalties to support young reporters). Then, the book "Pisanie. Z Ryszardem Kapuścińskim rozmawia Marek Miller" will be presented along with a documentary film "Ryszard Kapuscinski" (1987) by Jacek Talczewski.

Tuesday's meeting with Miroslaw Ikonowiczem - Ryszard Kapuscinski's friend and author of "Hombre Kapuscinski" - will take place in the bookstore of the Institute of Reportage "Boiling the World" in Warsaw. Conversation with the writer about his book will guide Mariusz Szczygieł. Admission to the meeting is free.

Beyond Warsaw's meetings, Chicago’s DOVA (Department of Visual Art) Temporary Gallery till 4 February 2012 exhibits "Ryszard Kapuscinski: The Poet of Reportage". The show is organized by the Consulate General of Poland in Chicago and several organizational units of the University of Chicago. Exhibition presents the life chronicles of a writer, his series of photographs, fragments of Kapuscinski’s texts and historical background of events which the traveller had witnessed.
