The Racławice Panorama (Panorama Racławicka) exhibited in Wroclaw’s rotunda is a unique picture, rooted in the mass culture of the 19th-century.
The enormous oil painting (15 x 120 m [49.2 x 393.7 ft]) depicts the most important battle of the Kosciuszko Uprising – the Battle of Racławice, won by the Polish troops.
The Panorama was painted by Jan Styka and Wojciech Kossak in 1894 in Lviv, where it was exhibited until the outbreak of the World War II. During the war, the painting was partly damaged, but it restored to its previous condition after a long conservation process in Wroclaw.
The authors applied a number of interesting painting solutions and techniques (e.g. a specific perspective and lighting) in order to bring the viewers back to 1794 and make them feel like participants of the great battle.
The effect of the monumental picture, in connection with battlefield elements designed around the canvass, is very vivid. In order to learn more about the Battle of Racławice, you may watch one of the multimedia presentations about the Panorama and its authors and a spatial map of the combat trail of the Kosciuszko Uprising.
