Twice a year the Supreme Council for Scientific Research in Madrid (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas, CSIC) prepares “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.” The Council creates a list of schools by examining university communication with the receivers through the Internet. Other aspects taken into consideration while creating the ranking are: the university's development of communication between its researchers by the internet network (e.g. via knowledge repositories), the importance of Open Access projects, the activity on the network of the university itself and its researches and, last but not least, the university’s websites positioning on the Web.
After analyzing more than 20 thousand institutions related to higher education from around the world, "Webometrics Ranking of World Universities" emerged 500 most visible universities on the Web. The first places were taken by American schools, that is: Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and The University of Stanford. In the same ranking Polish universities took up five positions (a year ago there were only two). These are: the Jagiellonian University in Krakow (293 in the world and 110 in Europe), AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow (301.miejsce), Warsaw University (347th), Warsaw University of Technology (354th) and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (381st).
