Night of the Perseids: the Meteor Shower

One of the most interesting activities this weekend, especially if you are somewhere on a mountain top, far from city lights, could be a romantic night under the Perseid Meteor Shower. For Europe and North America, the meteor shower peaks August 12th & 13th, during the European night and morning (01.00 – 13.00 GMT), with more than 50 meteors per hour.
The Perseids have been observed for at least 2,000 years and are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years. The meteor shower tonight is the fullest, and most spectacular of all observed around the world each year. It peaks on tonight and into the early morning of Saturday, Aug 13. To celebrate, NASA invites you to join them in an all night chat with NASA astronomer Bill Cooke and his team from NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. They will be answering your questions about the Perseids on Friday, Aug. 12 at 11 p.m. EDT — 03:00 UTC GMT.

Just head out to the countryside where the stars and meteors will be at their brightest.
If you cannot see the Perseids outside, for any reason, NASA will feature a live video/audio feed of the Perseid shower, embedded on this page.
