Marek Kotański (1942-2002) - psychologist and therapist widely known as a social campaigner. In 1981 he set up a youth movement called Monar to combat the drugs problem. Today Monar has 25 centres all over Poland. In January 1994 Kotański founded Markot, an institution which tackles the problem of homelessness. Today there are 65 Markot centres in Poland (including houses for single mothers, handicapped children, and the old and sick). Apart from Monar and Markot, Kotański also established 27 special therapeutic centres all over Poland. He initiated many campaigns, including another anti-drugs movement called the 'Chain of Pure Hearts', and in 1994 he launched a campaign to promote the social acceptance of people suffering from AIDS. He was awarded many prizes and distinctions, including the Brother Albert Prize. He was also honoured withthe Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1996), and the Commandor's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (posthumously in 2002). Died in a car accident near Warsaw.
