Łemkowska Watra (July)

The end of July, Zdynia
Every year, at the end of July the International Festival of the Lemkos Culture is held in Zdynia. A small village in the Carpathian Mountains attracts the Lemkos community from all over the world.

The Lemkos is the Slav nation displaced from the lands in the Carpathian Mountains during the war. Today they are sparse all over the world but they remember about their rich culture that comes back to life once a year during the festival in Zdynia.

The event organised by the Lemko Union is attended by thousands of people. Guests take part in concerts, meetings with artists, workshops, exhibitions, folk dances and songs. Groups from the Ukraine, Canada, Slovakia and Serbia perform during the festival. You can taste the Lemkos cuisine, e.g. kiesełycia z komperami i.e. Lemkos soup made from fermented porridge oats with potatoes.

The word “watra” means a bonfire in the Podhale region. This is a word that conveys very well the atmosphere of the festival, the warmth of shared fun, dance, songs, cultivation of tradition.
