Lanckorona is a unique place. It is the size of a small village (2 thousand inhabitants), and yet it has a big market square, surrounded by narrow streets and picturesque houses not to be encountered elsewhere. Lanckorona is situated on the hillside of the Lanckorońska Mountain, not far from Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Kraków and Wadowice.
Hardly anyone can resist the allure of Lanckorona. It enjoyed municipal rights from 1361 till 1933. The most famous and extolled sight of Lanckorona is its steep market square surrounded by wooden arcaded houses of the 19th century. These houses are much-admired for their shingled roofs which form wide eaves over the facades. A picturesque view over the Beskidy Mountains stretches from the market square.
Ruins of an old castle erected by Casimir the Great emerge from among the trees. During the Confederation of Bar, it served as a place of fierce defence of the confederates. Saint John the Baptist Church (1336), which was altered in the 16th century, is as old as the castle.
The Lanckorońska Mountain (550 meters above sea level) overlooking the village belongs to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska cultural and landscape park which is entered on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Lanckorona offers something fascinating to any visitor. Among such objects there is the Prof. Antoni Krajewski Museum hosting an exhibition on cottage interior and traditional household equipment, as well as an old bakery equipped with coal stove, or a well guarded by an angel figure. Lanckorona is often chosen by inspired painters, poets and tourists who would like to get a breath of fresh air, relax in quiet and enjoy the moments when time slows down.
