Kościuszko Mound (Kopiec Kościuszki)

The most famous mound in Poland, Kościuszko Mound is situated on the Blessed Bronisława Hill in Krakow. A symbolic tomb is a tribute to the great national hero, Tadeusz Kościuszko.

Tadeusz Kościuszko (1746–1817) was an outstanding fighter for freedom in Poland and in the United States. In 1794, in Krakow he led an upraising called The Kościuszko Uprising, which was one of the most important Polish rebellious bid for independence. Despite a defeat, the uprising made the Poles morally stronger and for the next generations it acted as a spur to fight for independence.

The grave of the general created in imitation of the Mound of Krak, a legendary founder of Krakow, was built in the years 1820–1823. It was built from the soil from battle fields of the Kościuszko Uprising – Racławice and Maciejowice and from the places of battles fought by Tadeusz Kościuszko during the American War of Independence. At the top of the cone there is a rock from the Tatra granite.

The Kościuszko Mound is a highlight of the Krakow landscape. The place that used to be pictured by painters, now enraptures the tourists with its diversified panorama. There is a view from the mound over the green Błonia Commons, historic Wawel castle, industrial district Nowa Huta, forests, rocks of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and the Tatra summits.
