August, Duszniki-Zdrój
Popularity of Duszniki Zdrój is related to Frederick Chopin. One of the most famous composers in the world was 16 when, in August 1826, he came to Duszniki to treat his lung disease.
The treatment including mineral water, goat’s milk, and, most of all, the local climate, worked as planned. Chopin played here two concerts, the income from which was donated to children orphaned by one of the patients.
120 years later, the first International Chopin Piano Festival was organized. Today it is the oldest musical festival in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. The participants are the most outstanding artists, winners of prestigious national and international competitions. Great post-war era pianists played here, among others: Halina Czerny-Stefańska, Barbara Hesse-Bukowska, Piotr Paleczny, Jan Ekier, Regina Smendzianka, Adam Harasiewicz, Krystian Zimerman, Stefan Askenazy, Światosław Richter, Garrick Ohlsson.
