Graduation Towers in Ciechocinek

Graduation Towers in Ciechocinek are a unique monument of the 19th century, the biggest in Europe wooden structure of this type. They are used as a therapeutic inhalatorium by patients and visitors of the health resort.

Three monumental brine graduation towers are located in the centre of Ciechocinek and they are the most distinctive attraction of this city. They were built on the initiative of Stanisław Staszic, a feature writer and reformer of the Enlightenment and at the beginning they were used to evaporate water from springs rich in brine to obtain table salt. However, it was quickly discovered that the therapeutic aerosol resulting from the evaporation and rich in iodine has beneficial impact on many diseases.

The graduation towers are similar in shape to a horseshoe, they are 1741 m long in total and 15.8 meters high. They are supported by approx. 7000 oak stilts dug into the ground, on which a spruce and pine structure is built, filled with blackthorn down which the brine flows.
When inhaled by strollers, the salutary mist around the graduation towers has an excellent effect on the respiratory tract and lowers blood pressure.
