Pacanów, the Fairytale Capital of Europe, is a place to go for all those who dream of travelling to the land of their childhood and meeting their beloved fairytale characters. The state-of-the-art Tale Centre, a unique institution of this kind in Europe, offers a lot of attractions both to children and adults. The Centre’s highlight is an extraordinary exhibition which gives the visitors an opportunity both to play and learn about fairytale creatures from various European regions.
The village of Pacanów was made famous by an adventurous story of Koziołek Matołek (Silly Billy-Goat), a fairytale character created by Kornel Makuszyński and Marian Walentynowicz.
Pacanów was granted the title of a Fairytale Capital of Europe on 1 June 2003. Today, it has a state-of-the-art cultural centre for children, including a library, a screening and theatre room and workshops; it is surrounded by a fairytale garden with garden houses and an amphitheatre at a pond.
The centre’s highlight is an exhibition entitled ‘Word of Fable’ (‘Bajkowy Świat’). The visitors participate in an interactive play with help of multimedia technologies. Children travel across Europe and learn about differences among fairytale characters from various European regions.
There visitors are shown around the world of fable by unusual guides: Tinker Bell, Peter Pan or Snow White.
Each room brings new surprises: meetings with fairytale birds, talking stones, Thumbelina sleeping inside a flower; a passage from the Mouse Hole right into the Dragon’s Den; a walk along the Rocks of Fear; listening to stories told by crystal balls and many others.
Pacanow is the venue of many initiatives, contests, meeting with children. It also hosts an annual Children’s Culture Festival (Festiwal Kultury Dziecięcej).
