European Culture Congress

08.09.2011 Wrocław

Everything is fluid – even culture

September 8 sees the start of the European Culture Congress under the slogan "Art for Social Change", an event which forms one of the milestones of the Polish EU presidency.

Approximately 300 artists, scientists and philosophers will take part in meetings, artistic events and projects held during the Congress. Some of the leading names include Zygmunt Bauman, Umberto Eco, Vaclav Havel, Zbigniew Libera, Amos Oz, Anda Rottenberg, Tadeusz Różewicz and Zbigniew Rybczyński.

The Congress program has been constructed around the book by professor Zygmunt Bauman, "Culture in a Liquid Modern World" and it will be the author who will officially open the Congress. The premise seems very interesting: proving that culture is one of the most vibrant and diverse spheres of civilization, while outlining the future framework of its development and attempting to answer the question if culture (keeping in mind that this concerns European culture) is one common road or perhaps a multitude of various paths. Should we endeavour to merge them into a European cultural union of sorts, or does strength lie in diversity?

However, if you don't find yourself stimulated by these undoubtedly existential questions, you can always have a rest on one of the "Fikka" chairs – "discursive furniture", or slide one over to the nearest group of people. In this way, you can have your share in putting the slogan "Culture for Social Change" into practice.
