Cieplice is almost 700 years old and is the oldest health resort in Poland. It is famous for its springs that have sprouted since ancient times with temperature reaching 90 degrees Celsius.
The first mention of Cieplice comes from 1281 and it says about establishment of the first health resort in Jelenia Góra valley (Kotlina Jeleniogórska) by knights hospitallers from the Order of St John of Jerusalem. In “Ciepłowody”, as that is how the health resort was called ages ago, Stanisław Koniecpolski, Hugo Kołłątaj, Princess Izabela Czartoryska, Johann Wolfgang Goethe were treated. However, the most eminent visitor was Marie Casimire Louise de La Grange d’Arquien (Marysieńka) Queen of Poland, the wife of John III Sobieski, who used to come here with her splendid court.
Today, just as hundreds of years ago, the health resort is famous for its thermal waters rich in compounds of sulphur, silicon and fluorine as well as therapeutic mud. People come to sanatoria to treat motor organs, urinary system and female diseases.
