Battle of Warsaw 1920 remembered

12.08.2011 Warsaw

From 12 to 15 August 1920, the Polish army ensured a resounding victory over Russia, which went down in history as a crucial turning point in the fortunes of Europe. The Red Army eager to carry communism to Western Europe on its bayonets was brought to a halt and thus the continent was saved from the totalitarian rules the spread of Bolshevism would have resulted in.

The anniversary of the Battle of Warsaw, also referred to as the Miracle at the Vistula River, is marked as a public holiday in Poland. Every year, numerous celebrations are held throughout the country to commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for the freedom of Europe. Also, the battle is reenacted in Ossów near Warsaw. The spectacular living history event attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world.
