Bartek oak tree is the best known tree in Poland. It grows between Bartków and Zagańskie in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. It is 700 year old, 30 meters high, the circumference of the trunk at ground level is 13.4 m. At the beginning of the 20th century the magnificent oak partially burned down, and a dozen years later its trunk was filled with concrete. In 1991, the massive tree was hit by lightning and supports had to be installed. From 1952, Bartek oak tree is recognized as a natural monument.
A legend says that it was the favourite of kings. During hunting, kings such as Bolesław Wrymouth and Casimir the Great camped under the tree. Władysław Jagiełło prayed in its shadows, and John III Sobieski supposedly hid a harquebus, a Turkish sabre, and a bottle of great wine inside its hollow.
Near the Great Bartek grows Small Bartek – an oak planted in 1966 for the 1000th anniversary of the Polish State.
