54th "Warsaw Autumn" International Festival of Contemporary Music
Autumn is here... Not the season – Warsaw Autumn.
We've already had one weekend with Warsaw Autumn. This is the 54th encounter with contemporary music, as the Festival was first held in 1956.
Originally, the event's aim was to familiarize the Polish audiences with modern Western music and break the isolation with which the Polish artistic milieu had been struggling during the Stalinist era. The Festival quickly won the acknowledgement of both critics and audiences alike. It was, and still remains, the only internationally renowned contemporary music festival of its kind in Poland.
Warsaw Autumn is an eclectic festival – this is the only way for it to be, as it presents a very wide spectrum of the directions taken by contemporary music, including audio art and sound installations.
This year, the "adult" Autumn is joined by Little Warsaw Autumn – the first contemporary music festival organized with children in mind. Still to come – an event on Saturday, September 24 at Królikarnia (The Rabbit House), with admission free of charge.
Another free event held on Saturday will be the oratorio for orchestra and the Warsaw Citizens' Choir.
